To mitigate the adverse effects of excessive screen time, several Connecticut schools are piloting tech-free hours to encourage mindfulness and interpersonal skills.
HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT โ Alarmed by the rising concerns over excessive screen time affecting students' mental health, a number of Connecticut schools have introduced tech-free hours in their daily schedules. Aimed at encouraging face-to-face interactions and mindfulness, this initiative represents an innovative approach within the state's education system to address students' holistic well-being.
Educators and mental health professionals have long warned about the potential negative effects of prolonged screen exposure on young minds. With digital devices becoming ubiquitous in classrooms, the balance between technology use for educational purposes and the need for mental wellness has sparked vigorous discussions. The implementation of tech-free hours is seen as a pragmatic strategy to facilitate this equilibrium.
Fairfield Public Schools are among the first to adopt this approach, instituting one hour each school day where students engage strictly in activities devoid of digital screens. According to Superintendent Mike Cummings, this initiative not only enhances student engagement in non-digital realms but also promotes better concentration, reduces anxiety, and improves interpersonal skills (The Hartford Courant).
Incorporating tech-free periods in the curriculum may also improve students' mental health outcomes. Kathy Higgins, a school counselor in New Haven, observes that students appear more relaxed and attentive post tech-free sessions.
